Citizen oversight and monitoring of community health centers (Puskesmas), in conjunction with appropriate feedback delivery, are critical accountability and improvement mechanisms. On November 26, MADANI’s local CSO Forum AKSARA in Tasikmalaya District, West Java, in collaboration with the District Health Office (DHO), delivered the results and ensuing recommendations of a recently completed complaint survey on maternal and child health services in selected Puskesmas. The survey represents a milestone for the district, as it is the first time the DHO has worked with local CSOs to assess the service quality of frontline health centers in the region. The key recommendations include the following: 1) to increase the maternal and child health budget allocation at Puskesmas, 2) to support the capacity of Puskesmas staff in meeting minimum service standards, and 3) to replicate MADANI’s programs at two pilot sites to other areas. As a result of the survey, the Tasikmalaya DHO will publish a “Service Improvement Pledge” (Janji Perbaikian Layanan) for maternal and child health, as well as schedule a meeting to brief the head of the Tasikmalaya Government (bupati) to spur further action.
