The Local Government of Makassar signs agreement with MADANI civil society partners to increase tolerance through cooperation among youth groups of different backgrounds

Aug 8, 2021

The City of Makassar, the provincial capital of South Sulawesi, has for decades been known for brawls between various youth groups.

To address this, MADANI’s Lead Partner CSO and the MADANI-supported multi-stakeholder forum, Forum BARANI, selected to work on youth tolerance as its thematic focus. Through a series of consultations with community leaders and different youth groups in Makassar during March-June 2021, the Forum BARANI has identified potential interventions for how tolerance among youth groups could be strengthened. A lack of forums to interact andexpress themselves positively were identified as a major contributing factor to the violence among youth. These solutions have been discussed with the local government during a series of meetings in June-July, and finally on August 6, 2021, led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Makassar government, Forum BARANI, and the MADANI Lead Partner, the Institute of Community Justice (ICJ). The proposed intervention relates to using facilitators to support an community-based “Inclusive Youth Forum” that will provide a safe and inclusive space for promoting cooperation among youth groups of different backgrounds to reduce prejudices. This local solution will be piloted by Forum BARANI in two neighborhoods, while the Makassar government will establish a “Synchronization Team” to better coordinate activities carried out by different technical government agencies in each neighborhood. The local government will also potentially provide support for scale-up of the local solution in other neighborhoods.
