The agreement, which is valued at 1.5 billion IDR (~100,000 USD), will enable PRK-I to empower Islamic boarding schools (Pondok Pesantren) to optimize the management of their small enterprises. Many boarding schools in Indonesia operate small businesses, often related to handicrafts, food and beverages, garments, fashion accessories, or furniture, to generate income for the school, while also teaching students the basics of business. However, many school-managed enterprises lack proper planning and are often run with little professional assistance.

In early 2023, PRK-I will provide training and organize field workshops on business permits, packaging, branding, and quality control to 90 Islamic boarding schools. PRK-I is also collaborating with online marketplaces Bukalapak and Shopee that will transfer their knowledge on social media and digital marketing.

This agreement illustrates USAID MADANI’s contributions toward building the self-confidence and skills of local CSOs, specifically related to organizational capacity, professionalism, efficiency, and improved performance in carrying out strategic planning and activities, such that they are now able to pursue these private sector partnerships. In three short years, PRK-I in Tasikmalaya has gone from an organization that was shunned by the local government to working in collaboration with both government agencies and the private sector.
