Representatives from 15 organizations participated in the discussion, including national-level civil society organizations such as Muhammadiyah and the Indonesian Family Planning Association, and international non-profits such as Save the Children and White Ribbon Alliance. During the event, RISE Foundation presented their findings from a series of citizen hearings on maternal and child health which they had conducted across 15 MADANI districts from January to March 2023, and where a total of 578 people participated. In the hearings, RISE Foundation discovered several key issues: (1) the quality of health services does not meet the healthcare minimum standard; (2) pregnant women and children are not adequately covered under the National Health Insurance Program (BPJS); (3) there is an insufficient number of health workers; and (4) a need exists to overcome geographic and infrastructural barriers, which limit citizen access to health facilities in disadvantaged areas. Correspondingly, the participants provided their suggestions and recommendations on topics related to strengthening ministerial and inter-departmental coordination and program integration, improving CSO participation and community engagement at the grassroots level, providing CSOs the opportunity to monitor and oversee the health budget, and strengthening collaboration between private sector actors. RISE Foundation will present their recommendations to national policy makers in June 2023.
