City of Palopo Wins 2021 National Sanitation Award with Support from MADANI Partner

Nov 8, 2021

"The City of Palopo, South Sulawesi, has struggled in managing its 50 tons of daily organic household waste, out of which only 60 percent can be recycled by conventional methods – the rest is thrown away or burnt.

MADANI’s lead CSO partner in Palopo, Yayasan Bumi Sawerigading (YBS), together with the multi-stakeholder forum Mapaccing, has developed a recycling program using Black Soldier Fly biowaste treatment that turns organic waste into liquid fertilizer, compost, and protein for animal feed. This innovation has been recognized by the Palopo government and was part of Palopo’s application for the National Community-based Total Sanitation (STBM) Award, issued by the Ministry of Health to recognize regions for improved sanitation and hygiene achievements. In October 2021, Palopo was announced as winner of the 2021 STBM Award in the sustainability category. YBS’s contribution is an example of MADANI’s support for promoting community interest and local voices in public sector innovations, such as municipal waste management. This innovation will, in FY22, be piloted and scaled-up in more sub-districts with support from Palopo’s Environmental Agency and funding from the private sector.
