New Skills Allow USAID MADANI Partner CSO to Empower Women through Knowledge Transfer

Oct 29, 2022

USAID MADANI’s Lead Partner CSO GPP Jember (East Java) initiated the School for Independent Women – Sekolah Perempuan Mandiri – in early 2022.

Training participants discuss their findings.

The goal of this program is to accelerate the development of young women’s leadership capabilities in using their voice and advocating for policies that protect their rights. On 22 October 2022, GPP conducted the first in a new series of trainings to improve women’s knowledge on advocacy, maternal and child health, and how to become economically independent. The hands-on activity involved fourteen women from a diversity of backgrounds, including activists, social workers, paralegals, and domestic violence survivors. Conducted in a rural part of Jember, the training provided the opportunity to carry out problem mapping by interviewing villagers, present and discuss findings, and develop a variety of audio-visual communications products. This program is one example of how MADANI’s mentorship, on topics such as strategic communications, citizen journalism, social analysis, and advocacy, has enabled GPP, and other Lead Partner CSOs, to better support and empower their local community.
